The first appearance of anything like ties seems to be around the early 1700’s when men would wear a scarf like item around their neck. Bow ties appeared in the 1740’s and it was not until around 1860’s that the tie as we know it appears.
In 1870 ties were loosely knotted, formed into a bow or drawn through a seal ring and cravats were very fashionable.
In the early 1900’s pencil thin bow ties were in fashion. The white bow tie was worn with full evening dress, black bow tie worn with a dinner jacket. In 1914 narrow ties were in fashion. By 1920 bow ties were worn for day wear in striped, paisley or spotted patterns.
