1920s Fashion

1920s Fashion

Fashion for Women – 1920 George V

Women’s fashion in this period created a straight silhouette. All garments were loose and easy fitting. Skirts were barrel shaped and a little above the ankle in length. The waistline dropped to below the natural waist. Hats had wide brims.

The fabrics were woven and included velvet, georgette, shantung, velvet brocade, serge, rough checks, gabardine, gold and silver lace, diaphanous net, and knitted wear. The colours were khaki, browns, dull yellows, beige, greys, navy blue, for the day wear and brilliant colours for the evening wear. They were decorated with embroidery and printed or painted fabrics were influenced by Chinese, Japanese and Russian art. You would see striped fabrics. There was bead embroidery and tassels used. For evening wear jewelled shoulder straps and gold embroidery were popular.

Accessories – Spanish shawls, Japanese sunshades. Long necklaces or large amber or stone beads were strung on a knotted cord and long pearl necklaces. Wrist watches and vanity cases were fashionable, as were large fans of ostrich plumes or peacock feathers for evening wear.
