Knitting A Scarf

Busy knitters' hands make happy hearts

ALLENTOWN - Many hands make light work.
In the case of the Allentown High School Knitting Club, members' hands have been busy during the 2006-07 school year. The knitters have been using their newfound skills to create hats and scarves for various community programs, according to Katie Mueller, the club's president.
Recently, the Knitting Club donated a basket of knitted hats for newborns to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold Township as part of its community service efforts.

Mueller presented the hats to Joan Nealon, the director of volunteer and guest services, and the maternity ward nursing staff, all of whom greatly appreciated the handmade items.

During the holiday season, the club also donated knitted items for the Giving Tree at the Allentown post office. The post office gave the hats and scarves to a local women's home that serves underprivileged mothers and their children.

In addition, the club donated more than two dozen knitted hats to the Saints Peter & Paul Russian Orthodox Church in South River, Middlesex County, for its program "Warm the Children." The donated items were given to orphans in the Alapaevsk children's home in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
According to Mueller, both seasoned knitters and newcomers to the craft are welcome to join the club next year when it will enjoy its third year of existence.

"This year, the club worked hard to attract new members, help knitters fine-tune their skills and make community service part of its mission," Mueller said. "We hope to do more of the same next year in addition to expanding our membership and the scope of our projects."
