of the Journal StarPEORIA - A new exhibit is coming to Lakview Museum in the fall.
And the exhibit's organizers need your help.
Kristan McKinsey, vice president of collections and exhibitions, is hoping that Peorians will scrounge through their attics and closets for a host of items, including hats, scarves, neckties and umbrellas for an upcoming exhibit titled "Head to Toe: They Wore It in Peoria," scheduled to run Sept. 1 through Oct. 28.
The exhibit aims to use such items - including clothing and personal objects - from everyday life to flesh out the changing ways people lived, socialized and went about their daily affairs in the city during the 19th and 20th centuries.
"The exhibit will explore Peoria's history through the display of fashion accessories, photographs, ephemera and artifacts," McKinsey said in a news release.
"Peoria will be placed within the broader context of the history of the United States as well. While not aiming to be comprehensive, the exhibit should provide visitors with a way to make history come alive and take on a very personal meaning. Defining events and movements will be identified in text panels along with their impact on American social life and fashion trends, all of which will be illustrated by the exhibit objects."
Objects sought include clothing accessories such as hats, footwear, socks, stockings, gloves, scarves, handbags, collars, belts and neckties. Personal items might consist of canes, umbrellas, pipes and eyeglasses. Other objects sought are newspaper ads and articles, event programs, jewelry, brochures and photographs.
Any items used by the museum would be considered loans and returned to the owners, McKinsey said. Also, not all items submitted will be used in the exhibit. Rather, the goal is to create a large stockpile of items that can then be used as foundation for the actual exhibit.
"Head to Toe: They Wore It in Peoria" is a collaborative project involving Lakeview Museum, the Peoria Historical Society and the African American Hall of Fame.
"This exhibit is intended as well to demonstrate how the three partner organizations will be working together in the new Peoria Riverfront Museum to create dynamic and relevant exhibits based on community experience," McKinsey said. "Objects for display will be on loan from the collections of the three partners and from private citizens."
